8 Ways To Improve Yourself

You can always do something better than you have before, the key is simply to change your approach. The most successful and happiest people are constantly and consistently finding and implementing ways to improve themselves. If you are truly happy with where you are, 100%, then don’t read. But I’d guess you’re lying. There is always something you can do better.

Do Something New Every Day

In this day and age, there is basically no excuse for you not to be consistently improving yourself. We have so much content out there for us to consume at any point in time. No longer are we constrained to lectures, classes and physical books, but we have YouTube videos, TV shows, eBooks and Podcasts ready for us to watch/read/listen to at any point of the day. Try and aim to experience one new thing per day in order to learn, be it read an article or chapter, listen to a podcast or simply watch a new episode of a TV show. Do something that day you never have before and your brain will relish the new information.

Ask for Feedback

One of the biggest ways people fall short in improving themselves is to not ask for feedback. There is nothing wrong with making mistakes, we’re so often told, as long as we learn from them. So why aren’t we learning all the time? There is nothing stopping you from asking those around you how you could be kinder/smarter/more consistent in the same way you meet KPIs at work. Take a moment to seek feedback from your nearest and dearest and try to meet those new goals.

Edit, Edit, Edit

When it comes to receiving feedback, the next step is to improve based on that feedback. Constantly editing yourself is the only way to do this; do you think a book is written without an edit? You need to apply the same methodology to yourself in order to move forward, and be dedicated to making small but consistent edits in yourself to improve and become who you really want to be.

Listen More Than You Speak

It becomes so easy for us to be lost in our minds, our thoughts, our headphones, our next point to be made, looking the best in any situation. For once, mindfully and actively seek to listen. This doesn’t just mean in conversations, but listen to the world. The sounds around you. People’s conversations with each other. You will be surprised how much inspiration you find and the things you can learn from others and simply opening your ears.

Surround Yourself With People You Aspire To Be Like

A pro tip for becoming more aligned with your dream life is to be surrounded by people who you want to be like. When you are enveloped in their successes, you are inspired to try harder for yourself. This then goes back to the feedback point – if you want to be like these people, seek their feedback and see what they would do differently. Implement those changes that need to be made and find yourself improved.

Read Every Day

Bill Gates reads 50 books a year. I heard that once, and it stuck with me. Just pick up a fucking book. Read it. Reading improves your vocabulary, your knowledge, your ability to visualise, your creativity, your ability to form an argument – the list is endless. Read a paragraph if a chapter is too much for your tired mind at the end of the day. Read a buzzfeed article at lunch. Just. Fucking. Read.

Go To Free Classes

There are a plethora of free classes available at any given time – from yoga, to self-defence, writing, pottery, floristry, you name it. I know I said before that you don’t have to go to a physical class as you can learn most stuff online, and that is absolutely true as well. Physical classes, however, might help you meet some of those people you aspire to be like, and seek their feedback – and so the circle continues around. It’s a balancing act of physical and digital learning, which is all learning nonetheless and impreative to improvement. Google what’s on in your area and just go to something. Meet some new people and enrich yourself. Hey, if it turns out to be a complete waste of time/utter disaster/what the hell was I thinking I can’t do this type of thing, at least you have a good story to tell.

Nighttime Photoshoot

I’ve written so many of these posts before there is basically no need for an introduction – just go and check out my v talented friend who takes beautiful photos in the Sydney area. He will do parties and events too! If you’re reading this, love you Sib πŸ™‚ Check out his Facebook & Instagram!

We did this one in Newtown which is a cool, hipster part of Sydney. We had never done a night shoot before and the whole thing was kind of on a whim, so we’re pretty impressed with how the images turned out!

Gratitude

Gratitude is a word that gets thrown around a lot. People claim that without it, life passes you by. If you aren’t truly grateful for the things you already have, you will constantly be seeking more. Be it possessions, friends, love, looks, marks, money – you will always want more. I personally never really bought into this idea. How can something as simple as anΒ idea really change anything? But, much to my fascination, it can. It did. It continues to.

This one is for all you cynics out there that don’t believe in gratitude, mindfulness or happiness, which, it may shock you to learn, go hand in hand. It is quite rare to have one without the other.

IMG_1955.JPG

I took this photo on a warm afternoon with my friend, sitting on my couch. The afternoon sun was filtering in through my balcony window, and the steam from my freshly made cup of tea curled upward in the shaft of light. Without gratitude, I would not have loved that moment as much as I did – simply sitting with the love of my life, drinking my favourite drink on an afternoon with no worries. Moments like these are what make our lives worth living.

How present are you, truly? Are you skimming over this post because you’re bored? Or are you absorbing every word? What are you doing, feeling, thinking, right now? How does each individual part of your body feel? Are your thoughts controlling you?

Pause. Breathe deeply. Again. Be present. What can you see? What can you hear? What can you smell, taste touch? Presence in the moment is the first step to being grateful. Trust me, it takes time. You have to train yourself. But without being present, you can’t truly find your gratitude for the things that surround you. How could you, if you aren’t really paying attention to them?

IMG_2366

This is one of my favourite photos. My lovely candle burning on a bedside table I put together. Something so simple may not bring you joy if you are not adept at being grateful, but when I see this candle lit I am grateful for the beautiful smell, the way the flames flicker in the gentle breeze, how I am able to light whatever candle I want because I am able to live alone. The moment you stop treating the world like it’s out for you and treating yourself like its victim, you can find such perfect, hidden moments.Β

You can feel gratitude in your body. When you think about something you are truly grateful for, be it time, family, your pets or friends, try and pinpoint that exact warm feeling in yourself, and try to replicate it as much as you can.

I like to write my gratitudes down when it becomes too hard. Taking a moment to actually put ink on paper and not pixels on a screen is one thing, and using that ink to pen what it is you’re grateful for and why is on a whole other level. You don’t need a fancy notebook for this; scrap paper will do. This journal is from Kikki K.Β

IMG_2355

When was the last time you watched the sun set? Can you remember how the sky flares up gold and blood orange and intertwines with the oncoming night sky? Take ten minutes out of your evening and watch the sun disappear. Accept that another day has passed, and another will begin again.Β

Try and create gratitude as a habit. Build it into your daily routine. There are always things to be grateful for, and you can always start small. You are grateful for the sunshine or the rain, your bed, your friend, your favourite TV show. Begin at things you are easily grateful for, and progress into things that are more difficult to feel gratitude towards.

IMG_2357

When you realise what an insignificant spec you are in the scheme of the country, the world, the infinite universe, the easier it becomes to see your worth and wonderfulness.Β

IMG_2443

What is it that lights you up? What sets that spark alight in you? Every time you do that thing, feel the gratitude that you are able to. Do the thing more. Repeat.Β

To educate yourself for the feeling of gratitude means to take nothing for granted, but to always seek out and value the kindness that will stand behind the action. Nothing that is done for you is a matter of course. Everything originates in a will for the good, which is directed at you. Train yourself never to put off the word or action for the expression of gratitude. — Albert Schweitzer

IMG_2428

It can help to have a gratitude centre. Here, I have a map of my favourite place in the world, Hong Kong, some fairy lights, a picture of the stars, a plant and some of my favourite books. Whenever I look at it, I can truly feel the gratitudeΒ rising up in me, which stimulates me to feel it more throughout my day.Β

Remember – gratitude is a skill. You must hone it and practice it as much as you can. Maybe this seems too much like hard work, but trust me when I say, the beauty of it can change you.

August Bullet Journal

I have come to very much enjoy laying out my spread and planning my month ahead with my bullet journal, and it seems such a shame not to share it. I’m not particularly artistically talented and I know there are a tonne more beautiful bujo layouts around, but why not share what I’ve done too – who knows, maybe you’ll get a kick out of it.

For my theme this month, I’ve really gone for the ‘end of winter’ theme. I googled a heap of clouds, mountains and trees sketches and cut them out for my bujo (I can’t draw lol) and accented everything with the colour blue. I used a mixture of my Crayola supertips markers, Zig Millennium marker in pure blue 02, Zig writer marker in pure blue and Zig Calligraphy marker in pure blue.

IMG_2437.JPG

As you can see, I went with a basic title page, followed by my monthly goals page, a tracker for the book I’m working on at the minute, and a helpful monthly layout so I can see what days the dates fall on (I know it’s wonky, it’s bugging me too haha).

IMG_2438

For my next pages, I went with a vertical monthly spread and expense tracker. I love these pages as I have everything at a glance. I also really do use my expense tracker, and I love how I’m kept accountable for even the smallest of purchases.

IMG_2439

My trackers are my favourite part of the bujo system! Here you can see I’m tracking water and mood up the top in a line graph, with habits below in a box graph. I know it’s not the prettiest with all the lines, but when completed you can really see how well I did at sticking to my habits that month (plus, I love colouring them in at the end of each day!)

IMG_2440

I have only done one weekly spread so far, and have kept it super simple. I actually have used that space at the bottom for weekly goals, which I’m enjoying! I used to use a double page for my weeks but I find that I tend to use my Wunderlist app or scraps of paper for to-dos, so I really only need this for my events and bigger tasks. This layout really seems to work for me, though for next week I’m going to add in the dates because I forgot that this time!

For what I use in my bujo, readΒ hereΒ πŸ™‚

July Favourites

July has come and gone in the blink of an eye, but I still managed to love a few things here and there. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Nip + Fab Glycolic Cleansing Fix – Face Wash

IMG_2423.JPG

This face wash doesn’t look it, but foams up something crazy. I have definitely noticed a difference in the overall texture of my skin since using this. Just be warned – it’s strong and can sting a bit, and a little goes a long way.

Toni & Guy Leave In Conditioner

IMG_2421.JPG

I have taken to using a pea size (you REALLY don’t need more than that) amount of this and running it through the ends of my hair just after I’ve washed it. I really love how my hair feels after I use it!

Eau Thermale Eye Cream

IMG_2426.JPG

I was on the hunt for a very rich eye cream to attempt to sort out my eye bags, and I reckon this one is up there with one of the best. It’s rich, thick and very moisturising, and I love using this before bed.

Sheridan Towels

IMG_2418

My mum recently spoilt me with two sets of Sheridan bath towels and I adore them. There’s nothing quite like getting out of the shower and wrapping yourself up in a fresh towel that is huge enough to cover your entire body. Love this brand.

Dune – Frank Herbert

IMG_2419

As a sci-fi/fantasy fiend, it’s taken me a stupidly long time to get my hands on this book and read it. I must admit, it took me a while (very Game of Thrones-esque: reads like a history textbook for the most part), but I really loved the story and bizarre nature of this story. I’ll definitely get on to reading the rest of the series, but for now, powering through this monster of a book is enough!

Jurlique Skin Brightening Essence

IMG_2425.JPG

I apply this to my face every morning before my makeup, and I think it makes it last longer and look fresher. I have noticed an overall improvement in the glow and healthy nature of my skin since using it, and it smells so beautiful and calming.

Jurlique Chamomile-Rose Hydrating Essence

IMG_2424.JPG

Still on the Jurlique wagon, I have also been really loving this essence. It’s a bit of a gimmick, I won’t lie to you (especially considering the price), but I just love the way this makes my skin feel! All you do is pop a couple of drops into a bowl of hot water and let a flannel or face cloth soak in the mixture for a bit before running it over your face. This opens your pores, smells amazing, and preps the skin for deeper cleaning, meaning it’s the perfect supplement to your exfoliation routine or to use before a face mask.

Kmart Coconut & Almond Treatment Oil – Hair Care

IMG_2420

I love Kmart beauty products, and their hair care is no exception. I was devastated when Β I learned they have discontinued their Argan Oil range in some stores as the smell is incredible, but this is a close second. Very warming and wintery, this oil gives your hair a gorgeous scent and also moisturises it for the day. For $4 a bottle, you really can’t go wrong with this stuff!

What did you love in July?

My Sunglasses Collection

My mum always makes fun of me for having too many pairs of sunglasses. And, as mums usually are, she’s beyond right. I have a bit of an addiction to sunglasses, and so I thought I’d take the time to show you my pairs! I had quite a few comments on my June Favourites post about my Quay and LeSpecs sunglasses, so I thought it was only right for you to see the rest of my collection!

IMG_2386.JPG

These are my more expensive sunglasses (LeSpecs, Quay & Dangerfield), and definitely my most worn. I love these so much, I have a pair for every outfit.

You may have noticed I left off a pair of my Quay sunglasses, and that’s because I’m trying to sell them! If you’d like to be the owner, check them out here πŸ™‚

You can’t really see how nice the sunnies are unless you try them on, so I wanted to show you what they look like on me! Just keep in mind I have a very small face, so they probably won’t drown you guys as much as they drown me haha

What are your fave pair of my sunnies? I think the blue Quay ones are mine!

Work Makeup Routine

I get up reasonably early for work, so I have needed to streamline my makeup routine. I can’t sit around, playing with eyeshadows and deciding whether I should wear blush (note to self: ALWAYS wear blush, you want to look alive), so I’ve come up with a fast and easy routine that makes me look fresh and put together, but without being too much for a 9 hour work day in front of a computer (sometimes longer)

One of my top tips is to have it all packed the night before so it’s ready to go in the morning. I switch around the products I use a few times a week, depending on the day, what I’m wearing etc, but will always have an entire face of makeup in my makeup bag for me to use in the morning. I’m telling you – this is a LIFESAVER.

IMG_2364

I start with a clear primer, I’ve been using the ELF Acne fighting primer for a while now and it’s really good. Whatever you choose has to depend on your skin though, and how long you plan to wear the makeup for. My skin holds onto makeup reasonably well, so I can get away with a primer like this.

I then colour correct with NYX Colour Corrector, then use a beauty blender to buff no more than 4 half drops of NYX Total Control foundation on my face. I like to use concealer more than foundation, so I’ll then go under my eyes with something like the Smashbox BB concealer, and then around my nose and on discolourations with Essence Camouflage Concealer.

Cream products last longer, so I take the Be A Bombshell cream blush stick in Southern Belle on my cheeks, then set it all down with ELF HD Setting Powder (ELF needs to sponsor me real bad). Of course, you can always set your face with a setting spray to make it last longer, but I find for a regular day I’m okay with just powder.

To warm up my skin a bit, I use a bronzer like Hoola by Benefit, then highlight my high points with Smashbox Spotlight Highlighting Palette in Turn it On.

To define my face, I’ll run a bit of ABH Brow Wiz through my brows, then tightline my eyes with Chi Chi Eyeliner in Bronze Ambition. For long days, I’ll use a liquid eyeliner and so a small flick – my favorite for this is Kat Von D Tattoo Lockit Liner. I’ll top off with Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.

I rarely wear lipstick to work as it just comes off, and liquid lipstick is too uncomfortable for the day to day. I’ll run a bit of lip liner around my lips (Rimmel make a great nude one) and just apply lip balm.

This takes me about 5 minutes total and I’m good to go!
