Makeup For Bad Skin Days

When we have days where our skin isn’t looking the best, it can be so easy to want to load on the foundation and hide away from the world. Doing this, however, tends to worsen the breakouts and prolong their life span. Also, the last thing you want when you’ve got spots is to spend an hour looking at yourself in the mirror. So, I’ve developed a fast makeup routine for my bad skin days that makes me feel more confident but also helps my skin breathe a bit. It’s very simple, and all it does is even my face out a bit and help my confidence. I’m not trying to cover anything up, as spots are normal and if anyone thinks otherwise, they’re not living in the real world.

So, let’s get started!

After applying my usual skincare (updated skincare routine coming soon!), I use a combination of primers. One is the Elf blemish control primer to help my skin recover, but I will also use a pore filling primer to help even out the bumpiness of my skin.

Products Used:
-Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser
-Elf Blemish Control Face Primer
-Chi Chi Super CC Cream
-Smashbox HD Concealer in Fair
-Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Light
-Maybelline Green Concealer Stick
-Tarte Amazonian Clay Pressed powder
-Benefit Hoola Bronzer
-The Balm Hot Mama Blush
-ABH Brow Pencil in Medium Brown
-Chi Chi Eyeliner in Bronze Ambition
-Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Because I like to let my skin breathe, I use a CC cream, then concealer. If my breakouts are really bad I’ll use a green concealer first, but I’ll just dab a bit onto the back of my hand then press it onto the spot with my finger. I don’t go too heavy as you can see, I don’t really mind that you can still see I’ve got spots – everyone gets them. All I’m doing here is trying to make them appear a bit more calm while also helping them heal on their own.

I like to use a good quality powder on days like these that’s quite finely milled, as it sits nicer and makes all that concealer last longer. For bronzer, I will only use a matte as to not emphasise any texture, and for blush I like one with a sheen to it so I don’t have to apply highlighter for the same reason.

I’ll then fill in my eyebrows, throw some eyeliner in my tightline and load on the mascara – nothing fancy, just a basic look. I choose to have nothing on my lips except lip balm for two reasons:
a) I never really wear lipstick anyway
b) a lot of my breakouts are hormonal on my chin, so I don’t want anything near them to aggravate them. You can’t really tell in the images, but I have a split lip as well, so lipstick wouldn’t have worked even if my skin was clear!

Here you can see the before and after’s for yourself – there’s nothing fancy going on here, no heavy coverage or cake face. All I want to do when I’ve got some spots is not wear makeup and cover my face in spot cream, but I’ve got to go to work and therefore look somewhat presentable. So, unless I have a huge event on, I’ll stick to my theme of letting my skin breathe, while also eating well and drinking a lot of water.

Don’t forget your hair can also play an important part. Although it might be scary to tie your hair up when your skin is looking bad (we tend to hide behind our hair), if it isn’t the cleanest you might want to consider doing so to not antagonize your skin! Luckily in these photos I’d washed my hair the night before, so I was fine to leave it down – but it’s definitely something to consider!

*Disclaimer: I know that my skin isn’t the worst out there! I am lucky with relatively clear skin and I work hard at eating right, drinking enough water and using a good skincare routine to keep it that way. However, I still get the odd period where my skin says ‘fuck that’ and decides to ruin it all for me, and this is how I cope with it. Not trying to say you need to cover up any imperfections or that my skin is the worst there is*

What do you do when your skin decides to be ~problematic~?

Makeup For Bad Skin Days

March Favourites 2017

This month I have discovered a whole array of new things that I have come to love!

Mario Badesco Drying Lotion

I know everyone harps on about this, but it is completely warranted! I use this stuff to calm down spots, ones that have come up and ones that are brewing, and also to dry out those weird hormonal bumps on my chin. I absolutely can’t get over how much it has cleared up my skin, and it’s definitely worth a try!

IKEA Bed & Bedside Tables

My new TARVA bed and RAST bedside tables have been an obsession of mine. When I moved into this apartment I didn’t have a bedframe, and having one makes a huge difference to the overall ‘homey’ feel of it. The fairy lights are from kmart, the bedding from IKEA and the cushion was a gift. Stay tuned for more ~aesthetic~ photos in my apartment tour!

IMG_1830

Elf Flawless Finish Foundation

I would consider this $10 foundation comparable to the NARS Sheer Glow. I’m not kidding. Their shade range for pale skin is amazing, with just the right amount of yellow to neutral out the pinkness in my fair complexion. It has great medium coverage, a lovely demi-matte finish and lasts quite well throughout the day. It also comes in a gorgeous glass bottle that makes the product look like NARS as well as perform like it!

IMG_1837

Lip Lab Lipstick

For Christmas, my mum bought me a voucher to go to the Lip Lab in Paddington (Sydney), where you get to create your own lipstick and they make it in front of you. You get to personally create the colour, pick a formula, choose a scent, name it, insert additives like lip plumper and moisturiser – you can basically create your dream lipstick, and that’s exactly what I did. I’m in love with it!

IMG_1848

Zoella Sweet Inspirations Body Mist & Double Creme Lotion

This range has recently become available in Target in Australia and I was super excited about it! I have to say, I still prefer the original scent but this is still a very nice sweet scent. I find it works really well as a base for other perfumes too, complementing them with vanilla and sweet almond. The bottle is also beautiful, making it perfect for display

IMG_1838

Pop Sockets

I have been on the popsocket trend for a while now – so much so that I physically cannot hold my phone without it! If you haven’t tried popsockets, get on board! Phone grips, headphone winder and phone stand? Absolute win. I also recently picked up the phone holder that I have attached to my car dashboard, making my life SO much easier. I get my popsockets online and from Sportsgirl, my phone case is from Kmart.

IMG_1846

Simple Oil Cleanser

My best friend got me onto this and I’m really digging it! It’s a lovely hydrating and gentle way to take your makeup off at the end of the day. I definitely need to cleanse afterwards, and if I’m wearing a particularly heavy face of makeup I tend to swipe a bit of micellar water over my skin too, but for the most part this is just fine at melting down the makeup. Its scent is lovely and it’s a super inexpensive product.

IMG_1839

Elf Acne Fighting Primer

I picked this up at the same time as I got the Elf foundation, and I really like it! I can’t wait to grab their illuminating one. I don’t think it does a heap for my skin in terms of ‘blemish control’, but it’s a light, fresh and moisturising primer that definitely keeps my makeup looking nicer for longer. For the price, you really can’t go wrong. Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate the step up in Elf packaging?!

Morphe M504 Blending Brush

This blending brush I ordered off Beauty Bay and I’m obsessed with it. I’ve never used anything Morphe before, but the quality for the price is incredible. It picks up colour so well, blends it out nicely and doesn’t disrupt the pigmentation. I love it!

10-Minute Drugstore Makeup for Valentine’s Day

I’m not a huge believer in Valentine’s Day, but I’l take every opportunity I can to doll myself up! This year, for Valentines I am going for lunch with my best friend, and that’s about it. Still – I thought a very fast and easy makeup look would be perfect for getting into the spirit if you’re that way inclined! Enjoy xx

IMG_1750.JPG

Products Used:

Maybelline Baby Skin Primer
Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
Elf Tone Correcting Powder
BH Cosmetics Eyebrow Pencil
Tanya Burr Rosy Glow Cheek Palette
NYX Blush in Taupe (for contour)
Colourpop Gel Liner in Swerve
Chi Chi 3D Magic Lash Mascara (forgot to include in this pic – whoops)
NYX Liquid Suede Lipstick in 11

Although a lot of people go for a cute, shimmery look for Valentine’s, I thought ‘fuck it’ and decided to rock a red lip. I’d definitely go for a liquid lipstick, as they last through eating, drinking and kissing. I chose such a simple look because I really believe a classic winged liner and red lip with flawless skin looks good on everyone, is easy to achieve and is effortlessly in the spirit. I’d also go for a gel liner like I did for precision and staying power (this stuff won’t come off no matter what you do on V-Day night – wink wink).

Don’t forget to contour your nose a little and use some concealer and a flat brush to clean up your lip line and eyeliner.

Hope this gave you some inspiration!

Christmas Makeup Look #3 • Blogmas

This is my last Blogmas! For everyone who has been following, commenting, liking and reading all 24 posts – I can’t thank you enough! It’s been a challenge doing a post every day, but I’ve absolutely loved it and I’m so pleased that all of you seemed to have as well!

For my last post, here is my final Christmas makeup look, which is a super glowy, champagne-based look that I think is perfect for any Christmas occasion! I hope you love it!

img_1622

To achieve glowy skin, I began with Stila One Step Correct Primer, and then put a light layer of NARS Sheer glow over my skin to even out my skin tone. For concealer, I used Collection Lasting Perfection. I added some Becca Creme Highlighter in Champagne Pop, before setting my face with Hourglass Dim Light.

For my cheeks, I went for Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer, with a touch of NYX Taupe for contour. I layered on the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Moonstone, and finished with some NARS Orgasm blush. I set all of this down with NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray.

After filling in my eyebrows with BH Cosmetics micro pencil, I used Milk Chocolate from the Too Faced Chocolate Palette on my outer v, then heaped on the shade Marzipan. . After tightlining and waterlining with my Bronze Ambition liner from Chi Chi, I coated my lashes in Benefit Roller Lash.

For my lips, I wanted them nude and glossy, so I began with NYX Lingerie liquid lipstick, and then topped off with Bath & Body Works Lipgloss in Vanilla Bean Noel.

Christmas Makeup Look #2 • Blogmas

Christmas Makeup Look • Blogmas

Welcome to my Blogmas! I love Christmas so much, and the best way to celebrate is with Christmas related posts every day at 5pm WordPress time until the 25th! Hope you enjoy!

During this year’s Blogmas, I’ll be doing a couple of makeup looks for you guys! I feel like this is the time of year to really play around and have fun with colours and techniques, so today I’ve created a gold eyeliner look with a bright and classic red lip! I’m no makeup artist, but I think it came out pretty well, and I hope you enjoy, and maybe take some inspiration from it!

IMG_1389.JPG

For a flawless base, I used a Smashbox primer and some Body Shop hemp lipbalm to prep for the bright lip. I followed with Nars All Day Luminous foundation in the shade ‘Gobi’.

After filling in my brows with a BH Cosmetics pencil, I used the lightest shade from the Shaaanxo BH Cosmetics palette to set the eyelid, then blended the maroon/red shade all over my lid. I focused the colour primarily on the lid, then blended it up quite high.

img_1377

For the liner, I very thinly lined my upper lashline with the Kat Von D Tattoo liner in Trooper, then drew a larger flick on top with a gold pencil from NYX. I then packed on some ‘Get Lucky’ eyeshadow by ColourPop over the top of the pencil to really make the gold stand out. I don’t have a gold liquid eyeliner, but I feel that would probably be easier to use! I topped off with some Chi Chi 3D Magic Lash mascara, but I think this look would be amazing with some falsies.

I kept the cheeks simple after concealing with Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer and setting with Dim Light powder by Hourglass. I used a bit of Hoola bronzer by Benefit under my cheekbones, some Wisp highlighter by ColourPop and Nars blush in ‘Orgasm’.

The lips for me are the standout of this look, so I made sure they looked great with a lipliner – I chose Chanel’s Rouge for this. Then, I used Rebellious Red by Teeez, which is my favourite red lipstick of all time.

And there you have it! A Christmas makeup look which is a bit different but really simple! I hope you liked it, leave me a like if you did – it really helps me!

Ultimate Selfie Makeup

Getting the ultimate selfie is, of course, everyone’s biggest priority! Okay, I’m kidding, but knowing makeup that photographs well is pretty helpful. Of course, a bright lip and graphic eyeliner will look stunning in any photo, but I’ve decided to show you a much more natural look that I’ve tailored to play up my features in photos. Hope you enjoy!

IMG_0261.JPG

The base is everything in a photo, so I’ve gone for a porefilling primer, a bit of colour correcting under the eyes, lightly filled in brows (but still filled in) and a medium coverage foundation. I blended all of this in super well with a beauty blender.

I then moved onto my eyes. My eyes are the feature I like to play up to most, so I took my time here. Now, because I have brown eyes, I chose warm neutrals with a hint of purple from Too Faced’s chocolate bar palette to really make the colour pop. I kept the technique simple – darker colours on the outer v and crease and blended under the lashline. I also rubbed out some dark brown eyeliner (L’Oreal) after tightlining and waterlining. Lining my whole eye in a dark liner really makes the brown pop I feel. I curled my lashes and added approximately three hundred coats of Chi Chi mascara. I went for a nude, matte lip by Colourpop (Midi) and patted it in with my finger as I feel a subtle lip suits me better.IMG_0251.JPG

I then concealed (light for undereyes, normal for face), set that with the lightest colour from the Australis AC On Tour palette, and set my whole face with Hourglass Dim Light.

IMG_0249

I feel that contour is the most important thing in a photo, as the light can really take away the shape from your face. I used Hoola by Benefit, Moonstone by Becca for a highlighter and this beautiful elf blush. IMG_0250.JPG
