November Favourites | Blogmas 2017

Welcome to my 12 days of Blogmas series! Every other day until Christmas I will be posting something festive for you all to enjoy 🙂

Today isn’t Christmas themed, but you all know I can’t go a month without my favourites! Here is what I’ve been obsessed with for November.

Zoella Body Creams & Handcream

I recently picked up Zoella’s new whipped body butters and her new Christmas scent hand cream and love them all. I know she was in hot water with that advent calendar drama, but I do love her and her products.

Tanya Burr Contour Stick

I’ve been using this religiously this month – just adding a bit and blending it out before I add powder and it gives a very subtle contour. Very creamy, pigmented and easy to blend!

Miniso Spring Herb Essential Oil

This is a beautiful and fresh essential oil to have going in my diffuser and I’m really enjoying having it on all the time! Miniso do the best essential oils!

Harry Styles – Harry Styles

I was never really a 1D fangirl, so I was pretty surprised when I realised this month that I’m head over heels in love with Harry Styles lol. His new self-titled album is absolutely amazing and I’m obsessed with the songs Only Angel, Carolina, Kiwi (obviously) and From The Dining Table. He gives off SUCH Mick Jagger vibes, especially when he performed at the VSFS in Shanghai!

Korea

I feel like this is a given, because I’ve done a tonne of posts about it, but my favourite thing about November was that I began it in South Korea! I had the absolute best time, and would 10/10 visit if you have the opportunity!

Tanya Burr Selfie Lash Mascara

I was sceptical to try this, but this mascara is really nice! It layers well, separates, lengthens and creates a bit of volume. Truly the perfect everyday mascara!

Beauty Blender Holder

I grabbed one of these on a whim for $2 at kmart, but it actually makes a world of difference! It keeps my blender damp for longer and nice and fresh, plus means I never get any of the crap floating around in my makeup bag on my blender.

Peaky Blinders

I’ve loved this show for a couple years now, and the new season has just started – much to my excitement! It hasn’t let me down (unlike other shows *cough* Walking Dead *cough*). So beautifully shot, moves fast, written well and anything with Cillian Murphy in it has me hooked.

Armada – Ernest Cline

I gave this book a full review on my new series Zoe’s Bookshelf so I won’t go into detail here, I just loved this book! Read here if you want more info about it and to hear what I thought.

Makeup For Bad Skin Days

When we have days where our skin isn’t looking the best, it can be so easy to want to load on the foundation and hide away from the world. Doing this, however, tends to worsen the breakouts and prolong their life span. Also, the last thing you want when you’ve got spots is to spend an hour looking at yourself in the mirror. So, I’ve developed a fast makeup routine for my bad skin days that makes me feel more confident but also helps my skin breathe a bit. It’s very simple, and all it does is even my face out a bit and help my confidence. I’m not trying to cover anything up, as spots are normal and if anyone thinks otherwise, they’re not living in the real world.

So, let’s get started!

After applying my usual skincare (updated skincare routine coming soon!), I use a combination of primers. One is the Elf blemish control primer to help my skin recover, but I will also use a pore filling primer to help even out the bumpiness of my skin.

IMG_1951

Products Used:
-Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser
-Elf Blemish Control Face Primer
-Chi Chi Super CC Cream
-Smashbox HD Concealer in Fair
-Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Light
-Maybelline Green Concealer Stick
-Tarte Amazonian Clay Pressed powder
-Benefit Hoola Bronzer
-The Balm Hot Mama Blush
-ABH Brow Pencil in Medium Brown
-Chi Chi Eyeliner in Bronze Ambition
-Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Because I like to let my skin breathe, I use a CC cream, then concealer. If my breakouts are really bad I’ll use a green concealer first, but I’ll just dab a bit onto the back of my hand then press it onto the spot with my finger. I don’t go too heavy as you can see, I don’t really mind that you can still see I’ve got spots – everyone gets them. All I’m doing here is trying to make them appear a bit more calm while also helping them heal on their own.

I like to use a good quality powder on days like these that’s quite finely milled, as it sits nicer and makes all that concealer last longer. For bronzer, I will only use a matte as to not emphasise any texture, and for blush I like one with a sheen to it so I don’t have to apply highlighter for the same reason.

I’ll then fill in my eyebrows, throw some eyeliner in my tightline and load on the mascara – nothing fancy, just a basic look. I choose to have nothing on my lips except lip balm for two reasons:
a) I never really wear lipstick anyway
b) a lot of my breakouts are hormonal on my chin, so I don’t want anything near them to aggravate them. You can’t really tell in the images, but I have a split lip as well, so lipstick wouldn’t have worked even if my skin was clear!

Here you can see the before and after’s for yourself – there’s nothing fancy going on here, no heavy coverage or cake face. All I want to do when I’ve got some spots is not wear makeup and cover my face in spot cream, but I’ve got to go to work and therefore look somewhat presentable. So, unless I have a huge event on, I’ll stick to my theme of letting my skin breathe, while also eating well and drinking a lot of water.

Don’t forget your hair can also play an important part. Although it might be scary to tie your hair up when your skin is looking bad (we tend to hide behind our hair), if it isn’t the cleanest you might want to consider doing so to not antagonize your skin! Luckily in these photos I’d washed my hair the night before, so I was fine to leave it down – but it’s definitely something to consider!

*Disclaimer: I know that my skin isn’t the worst out there! I am lucky with relatively clear skin and I work hard at eating right, drinking enough water and using a good skincare routine to keep it that way. However, I still get the odd period where my skin says ‘fuck that’ and decides to ruin it all for me, and this is how I cope with it. Not trying to say you need to cover up any imperfections or that my skin is the worst there is*

What do you do when your skin decides to be ~problematic~?

Makeup For Bad Skin Days

April Favourites

This probably is coming a bit later than you’d expect for April Favourites, but I’ve been busy and better late than never, right? Here’s what I’ve been loving recently.

Santa Clarita Diet

I binged this show on Netflix in two days and loved every minute of it! It’s fast-paced, absolutely hilarious and the characters are amazing. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone, each episode is only 20 mins long so it’s really easy and fun to watch!

Aleka Dress in Plum – White Fox Boutique

IMG_1892

I wore this dress to my brother’s wedding at the end of April and got so many compliments on it! It is such a beautiful colour for my pale skin, and worked really well with my gold accessories. Such a gorgeous dress that I’ll definitely wear again! You can check out these photos on my instagram!

Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

IMG_1915.JPG

I know I’m probably the last person in the world to get on board this mascara, but I recently picked up a sample size and have come to discover I really like it! Especially when used in conjunction with a lengthening mascara, this makes your lases look ridiculous.

Vanity Planet Skin Spa System

IMG_1921.JPG

I used to use the vanity planet spin for perfect skin, and I liked it, but the batteries rusted up and the heads got jammed on the brush. When I wasn’t using such a hard core cleaning product, my skin started to get really bumpy, so I bought this one on a whim. I much prefer it to the other system, as the silicone brush doesn’t harbour bacteria. Definitely have noticed an improvement in my skin since using this, and I love that it has two speed settings.

Cream Blush & Highlighter

IMG_1917IMG_1920IMG_1918IMG_1919

I have really been into using cream products in April, as they look way more natural and last a hell of a lot longer than their powder counterparts. I’ve been loving the be a bombshell cream blush in ‘southern belle’ and the Australis stick highlighter in ‘light gold’.

Simple Light Moisturiser

IMG_1922

When I was getting bumps on my skin, I realised my use of oils wasn’t doing my face any wonders. So, I switched to a light moisturiser and I absolutely love it! If you’d like an updated skincare routine, let me know and I’ll do one for you guys!

Beauty Blender

IMG_1916

I never believed the fuss about the original beauty blender, but since I’ve tried it I just can’t go back. There’s something so specific about the way it works that I can’t put my finger on, but makes it outshine all replica sponges. If you haven’t tried it, do so, and tell me the cheap alternatives work the same. (Spoiler: they don’t)

Growing My Own Herbs

IMG_1913

Since I’ve been living on my own, I’ve been trying really hard to grow some of my own stuff. Right now, I’m growing basil, parsley, coriander, mint and rosemary, as well as keeping some succulents, and aloe plant and a Japanese peace lily. There’s something so nice about having to look after something that isn’t you, and then reaping the benefits in delicious cooking!

The Circle

IMG_1932

I know this is coming out as a movie soon, but that’s not why I read it. I grabbed a sample on my kindle, read it, then immediately had to go out and borrow the book. I read it in two days. It’s a very well written, fast-paced book that’s very difficult to put down once you get into it, and I strongly recommend it if you like technology, politics and control of freedom.

What have you been loving this month?! Let me know!

My Makeup Collection – Mascaras

In case you haven’t been following this series, I’m doing my makeup collection, category by category. I thought this would be a great way for you all to see how I store my makeup in a small space, on a budget.

If you haven’t read my others, check out my face products, blushes, bronzershighlighters and eyeliners posts. Next up, I’ll be going through my eyeshadows,  palettes, eyebrow products, lipsticks and, finally, other lip products.

Hope you’re enjoying!

~MY MAKEUP COLLECTION: PART SIX~

DSCF0305.JPG

I’m not going to lie – I hoard mascaras something ridiculous. So bear that in mind guys!

DSCF0322.JPG

For reference, I have naturally quite thick and dark lashes, that are somewhat long. I prefer a mascara that can really lengthen and that is really black.

My Mascaras
(Left – Right) (N = natural bristle applicator, R = rubber)

Benefit Roller Lash – review here (R)

Covergirl Lash Blast Length – nice and subtle, lengthening, cheap (R)

ChiChi 3D Magic Lash – amazing at doing both volume and length, really holds a curl (R)

Maybelline Collosal Cat Eye – pretty ‘eh’ for me, you have to really load it up (N)

Model Co Fat Lash – not bad but not worth it for the price in my opinion (N)

Maybelline One by One Volume – I got this because I ran out of mascara once (now I’m looking at this picture, I really doubt that) and it’s average. Also smells like black paint (R)

OXX Mascara – awesome for $2! (N)

Benefit They’re Real (sample and remover) – pretty decent, I quite like it but probably wouldn’t purchase the full size (R)

Hope you enjoyed! Next up – eyeshadows.

Love you all,

Zoe x
