2017 Favourites

This post is a month too late but hey, we got here in the end. In no particular order, here is a giant list of all the things that got me going in 2017 – things I think you all might enjoy too! We’ve got it all here – beauty, lifestyle, travel, music, movies, tv…

Zoella Moisturisers

I absolutely fell in love with these whipped body butters in 2017 – they are really moisturising and smell divine, plus they feel silky smooth on my skin. I have both the original scent and the newer Gelat’eau fragrance which are both really lovely. These are so cheap on feelunique.com – I highly suggest you check them out!

NYX Foundation Drops

It will be no surprise to any loyal readers that I am obsessed with these NYX foundation drops. Finally! A Colour! That matches! My pasty ass! Eeeek! They are super full coverage and build very well as a concealer, and come in a range of shades. The formula is very liquidy and I’ve found although it works well with a beauty blender, a stiff brush (like the Real Techniques expert face brush) is what it takes to blend this bad boy out.

Brown Eyeliner

Again, to no surprise, 2017 was the year of all around the eye brown eyeliner. I realised when I started working full time that a) I do not have the patience, time, energy or fucks to do liquid eyeliner at 7am while crying into my cereal, b) with my brown eyes, brown eyeliner makes them look more brown (can I say brown this many times in a sentence?) and c) eyeliner all around my tiny eyes makes them look smaller, yes, but also makes the whites pop so they look more intense. I love the look and I’m glad I discovered it for myself last year.

Miniso BB Cream

Hands down, this is the best BB cream I’ve ever tried. Yes, it’s a bit pink, but it’s b e a u t i f u l. It glides on, has reasonable coverage, evens out my skin and makes me look glowy. It’s SO cheap it’s ridiculous, so I highly recommend popping into your nearest Miniso and picking it up!

IMG_3716

White Fox Boutique Alexa Dress

I wore this banger to my brother’s wedding and got so many compliments on it! Desperate to wear it again – any suggestions on where?

KOREA

I don’t have anything else to say other than Korea was my absolute favourite thing of 2017. I adored every moment and am already planning on going back at some point this year. Check out my Korea posts!

Top Music

  1. Client Liaison – 80s style Aussie pop band, saw them twice this year
  2. Two Door Cinema Club – we saw these guys live and they k i l l e d it
  3. Harry Styles – his new album is everything I hoped for and more ❤
  4. Foals – really rocky discovery and I just love them
  5. The Weeknd – We went and saw him in concert and he was insane

Top TV Shows

  1. Handmaids Tale – by far my favourite show of 2017. No words. It’s just exquisite television.
  2. Peaky Blinders S4 – Vikings & PB are tied for 2nd place, both were incredible seasons of the shows and I was very impressed!
  3. Vikings S5
  4. Psycho Pass – this anime is one of my all time favourtes and I’m so mad it took me this long to discover it!
  5. Game of Thrones (obligatory mention) (it was okay)

Top Films

  1. Blade Runner 2049 – one of my favourite movies I’ve ever seen. Beautiful, cinematic, incredible story and soundtrack. They nailed this sequel.
  2. Kingsman Golden Circle – an insanely funny sequel to the original, I was worried they were going to fuck this up but they definitely didn’t! I can’t not laugh at this movie, it was so funny!
  3. Spiderman Homecoming / Thor 3 – both these Marvel movies were so funny! I was very pleasantly surprised with both and if you like fun, good time movies, these are for you
  4. Okja – very hard hitting, this movie really tugged at the heartstrings but was lovely to watch. Excellent movie of 2017.

Youtubers

My youtubers of this year were by far Kalyn Nicholson, Lavendaire and Amanda Rach Lee. Kalyn does lifestyle content that is super motivating and inspiring, Lavendaire does videos on intentional living, organisation and creativity, and Amanda does monthly bullet journal videos which are not only beautiful, but very relaxing to watch. I love both these amazing girls!

What did you love in 2017??

Top Tips for Travelling in South Korea

If you’ve been reading me recently, you’ll know that I went to South Korea! I had an absolutely incredible time, and definitely picked up some tips and tricks along the way. If you’re thinking of going, make sure you have a read!

Subway/public transport stops at midnight. We learnt this the hard way and had to get a cab home to our airbnb – we got there in the end but our taxi driver spoke zero English so it definitely was a mission! Although everything is open quite late, just be prepared that the subway stops at midnight. Speaking of, have your address screenshotted on a map on your phone – if I hadn’t done this who knows how we would have gotten home!

Get the subway app. This app is a lifesaver and will make your train trips so much smoother. Once you get the hang of the trains you get where you need to go a lot quicker!

Not everyone can speak English. There is some weird misconception that because everyone learns a bit of English at school, everyone can speak it. This. Is. Not. True. In touristy areas, sure, a lot of people can speak to you, but for the most part you end up communicating with pointing, looking at registers for prices, etc. A little politeness goes a long way, so learning the basics (hello, thank you, etc) really made our trip a lot better. You can see people’s eyes light up when you say thank you in their language!

You will get stared at. If you are coming from a Western country, you may not be used to this, but definitely as a couple of white girls speaking English, we had people stare at us all the time, especially in areas further out from Seoul. It’s not an issue at all as no one means any harm by it, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind when travelling!

The KTX at peak hour will not reserve seats for you and you will have to stand. When we caught the KTX to Busan, we thought we had seats both there and return, but when we went to board at 5.30pm to go back to Seoul, we were told we’d have to stand in the sections between carriages. We made it work by sitting on the floor (someone near us actually stood and slept the whole time – how???), but it’s 2 & 1/2 hours that would be better of sitting through. Moral – don’t expect a seat if you’re catching the KTX at peak hour.

WiFi is pretty much everywhere, so you don’t need an international simcard. The subways, most major shopping spots, starbucks, etc – everyone has WiFi. We got on just fine with screenshotted directions, our subway map and WiFi hot spots. Save your money!

Use blogs – there are blogs on directions from/to everywhere! Any time we wanted to go and see anything (especially places related to K-pop or K-drama, specific stores, etc) we just looked up someone’s blog and found exact directions with landmarks and everything. It worked a treat for us!

If you’re going to see DMZ, do the JSA too. The Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) is cool and all, but the really cool part is the Joint Security Area where you “technically” get to cross the border into North Korea. If you’re interested in going, make sure you book a tour (they aren’t that expensive!) and get both places in there. They take you to a whole heap of different locations and help you out with what is customary to do when visiting and facts.

Food is super cheap, so take advantage of it! Go to grocery stores and get a whole heap of snacks to try as well as eating the local food. The street food in areas like Myeongdong and Hongdae is also amazing!

Stay at an Airbnb instead of a hotel. They are really cheap (I think around AUD$250 pp for our 8 nights there) and very secure. Seoul is a very safe city and our Airbnb host made sure we felt as comfortable as possible.

Google Maps doesn’t work properly (satellites, North Korea, etc), so download Naver Map which is the Korean version of Google Maps for all your directions.

Do a layover tour! Depending on where you’re coming from, Seoul usually requires a stopover somewhere, and for us it was Beijing. For around USD$100, we got a personal driver to take us to the Great Wall of China and Tienanmen Square, because why not! Put your layovers to good use and visit another country while you’re at it.

My Week In South Korea

If you’ve seen my latest posts about overseas packing, you’d know I recently spent a week and a bit in South Korea! I had an absolutely wonderful time there and loved the atmosphere of it all. We stayed in an Airbnb in Seoul, with day trips to Busan and the DMZ/JSA, as well as a quick tour of Beijing during our layover on the way home. If you like bustling Asian cities, full of culture, shopping, entertainment and incredible food, put Seoul on your travel bucket list. It was the best place I’ve ever visited 🙂

I will also be doing a post with all my top tips as a foreigner travelling through South Korea, so if you’re interested in going, hold tight for that post!

My 21st Birthday

I’m 21! My birthday was June 5, and although turning 21 doesn’t mean much in Australia, I took a few days to celebrate making it this far and thought I’d share it with you.

With my best friend and my mum, we took off to the Gold Cost in QLD, where, although it’s winter, it was warm enough to swim and be in the sun. We had cocktails, beautiful lunches, played putt putt golf (which I won), went to the Star casino and won $50 on roulette, visited Dreamworld theme park and went to this cool holographic place that had a holographic planetarium.

The weekend afterward, I also had some drinks with friends in the city and saw my family for a delicious lunch.

Enjoy the photos!

We stayed at the Hilton Residences in QLD and had this amazing view!

Sweat Proof Summer Makeup

In Hong Kong (see my trip here), the temperatures were soaring, and so I had to perfect a very fast and easy makeup look that would last all day and look fantastic in my holiday snaps. Considering that it seems all of my Australian friends are in European summer right now, or Japanese summer, or anywhere in the northern hemisphere, I figured this would be useful for not only the travellers, but those of you smack bang in the middle of the heat. All of these products I picked because they were really good to travel with – i.e. compact, protected (see the cardboard and tin packaging) and within the liquid limits of international flights. Enjoy!

Base
Sunscreen, a pore filling primer, a good quality CC cream and some high coverage concealer all used lightly will give you a great base.

DSCF0464.JPG

(Nivea sunscreen, Maybelline Baby Skin, Chanel CC cream, Smashbox High-Definition concealer)

Face
After setting it all down, you need a touch of bronzer (it is summer, after all), some blush and highlight make your face not look flat, but go easy on the blush and highlight, because chances are you’ll be pink and shiny at the end of the day anyway.

DSCF0467.JPG

(Tarte Amazonian Clay Pressed Powder, Tanya Burr Rosey Flush Cheek Palette)

Eyes
After using a waxy eyebrow pencil for your eyebrows, a wash of shimmery colour over the lid with some brown in the crease is all you need, and a thin line of liquid waterproof eyeliner. I did change up my eyeshadow most days, following the same formula with different colours from the palette. After your lashes are curled, load on the mascara.

DSCF0469.JPG

(BH Cosmetics Eyebrow pencil, Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette (shades marzipan and milk chocolate), Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, Chi Chi 3D Magic Lash)

The Rest
A liquid lipstick is the only thing that will last in the heat, and I love this one from ColourPop. Then, SET IT ALL DOWN! Don’t forget this. The one day I did on holiday, the makeup literally slid off my face. Use a setting spray. Trust me.

For one of my best friend’s 21st birthday, I had the most incredible opportunity to accompany her to Hong Kong for eight days. It was an absolutely insane experience that I am so grateful for.
